Mercury & Lightning

“John Mark McMillan has clearly wrestled deeply with many things in his faith, and we find him confidently and honestly laying it all bare before us. In Mercury & Lightning, he has unleashed his magnum opus, and it is a must-hear album of 2017. There really cannot be enough praise heaped on this offering, and it would be shame for it to go unnoticed. If it doesn't grab you after one listen, give it another, wrestle with the layers, allow it to get under your skin; you will not be sorry you did. Please do not miss out on what should be a top album of the year!”

Friends… this is my favorite album I’ve ever produced.
I’m humbled & honored John Mark would trust me to walk with him as a friend and as a producer as we captured what was likely the most pivotal album of his career thus far. It was an album made during what John Mark described as a “crisis of faith”. He did what many Christian artists wouldn’t do — he made an album to document his journey of existential crisis, from faith to deconstruction of faith, and ultimately to its reconstruction. In doing so he proved the best records made are the most vulnerable ones. In doing so he provided an on-ramp back to faith for anyone else walking a similar journey.
Many fans old and new gravitated to this album’s unusual story, sound, and authenticity. As a result, Mercury & Lightning became John Mark’s highest charting album to date, peaking at No. 1 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart. It also charted outside of the Christian music realm, reaching No. 44 on the Top Rock Albums chart and No. 39 on the Top Album Sales chart.
I had the privilege of co-writing 2 of the songs on this project with JMM - “No Country” and “Nothing Stands Between Us” (perhaps my favorite co-write ever). What a beautiful moment in time.
The team on this record was world class and huge. A special shout out to Aaron Knott (Engineer) and Jesse Proctor — both of whom were there for the duration of the entire recording process, spanning somewhere around 120 days together over the course of 18 months — from Dec 2015-July 2017. It was an epic creative journey and one we will all remember forever.
Well done, everyone. Well done.
